simpleSPU is a sampler instrument and lo-fi effect modelled on the PlayStation's sound chip, built for the sound of late-90s game soundtracks. The instrument side ships about 100 presets (pads, strings, choirs, keys, leads, basses and drums); the effect side runs drums, vocals or a full mix through the same console, from subtle to heavily degraded. A 14-day trial gives full access before you buy. Also on iPad (AUv3 and standalone, iPadOS 15+) for £12.99, a separate one-time purchase.
About simpleSPU
simpleSPU installs as two plugins, an instrument and a matching effect called simpleSPU FX, both modeled on the PlayStation's sound chip. The developer states that no ripped game audio is used and that it isn't affiliated with Sony.
The instrument plays 24 voices by default and can be raised to 64. The effect has a dry/wet control and all nine reverb types, with presets that go as far as a setting called 2-bit Destroyer. On Linux the instrument also runs as a standalone app.
