Kaset

About Kaset

Kaset runs audio through a modelled cassette dubbing deck. The Generation dial sets how many copies away from the master you are, and every dub is another full pass through the tape model, so the top end falls from about 10 kHz on the master to about 4.4 kHz on the fourth dub.

Each pass stacks record pre-emphasis, saturation, playback de-emphasis, head bump, gap loss, wow and flutter, hiss and worn-oxide dropouts on top of the last. Speed error doesn't pile up: it is highest on the master and each dub drifts on its own. The panel adds Input, Saturation, Wow, Flutter, Hiss, Wear and Mix, and the random elements are seeded, so the same settings always give the same result.

The plugin reports 15 ms of latency, which the DAW compensates. For recording through it, the Track switch cuts that to 1.5 ms by using one moving head instead of five. Bypass is latency-aligned and bit-exact, so comparisons against the dry signal are fair.
