Studio tape recorder modeled stage by stage from the original schematic, with three record-amp captures, real tape hiss, and a DAW-synced transport.
About PTF-350
PTF-350 recreates a 1950s quarter-inch studio recorder running at 7-1/2 and 15 inches per second. Audio passes through the record amplifier, onto a modeled tape and back off through the playback head and its amp, so the drive, oxide saturation and hiss come from the signal path rather than an overlay.
RECORD LEVEL sweeps continuously across the Soft, Hard and Harder amp captures, and the INPUT TRANSFER SWITCH routes through the bridging pad and input transformer or straight to the level control. Record EQ follows the manual's curves within 0.4 dB, and tape saturation runs at twice the sample rate. A lower panel holds drive, tape drive, bias, wow and flutter, hiss, low end and a phase-aligned dry blend.
The transport is the unusual part. The tape holds 87 seconds per session and plays back once RECORD is off, FAST FORWARD and REWIND play the input sped up or backwards, LOW drops playback an octave, and STOP winds the music down over a second. There are 17 factory presets.
